The whole range of the variation, referred to the same unit of Force, is 4.4, which is, as was expected, very nearly the double of the range of the lunar diurnal inequality (i. 207). The mean magnitude of the range itself, from which the lunar variation is eliminated, is 28.9. The range is above the mean from the 28th to the 5th day of the lunation, and from the 13th to the 20th; it is below the mean in the other two quarters. Magnetic Disturbances. 119. The distinctive character of a magnetic disturbance is a rapid movement of the suspended magnets, causing them to deviate considerably from their normal positions, and in opposite directions alternately. The duration and the magnitude of these oscillations are as yet without the domain of law, and probably depend upon so many co-operating causes, that, like the gusts and lulls of the wind in an atmospheric storm, they will long baffle all attempts to refer them to their actuating forces, or to reduce them to order. But, notwithstanding these irregularities, it is now well known that the phenomena themselves have a tendency to recur at certain hours of the day, and at certain seasons of the year, more than at others (i. 214). This is shown by taking the differences between the actual scale-readings of the magnets and the monthly means corresponding to the same hour. The means of these differences, taken without regard to sign, will measure the average disturbance of the magnet in the month and hour in question, and will exhibit any periodicity which may exist in it. 120. The following Table contains the monthly means of these differences, in the case of the magnet of the declinometer, for each of the years 1844-185c. The means of the number...
